Megan dress

It’s been ages since I’ve made anything and it feels so good to have gotten back to my sewing machine! I’ve loved seeing all the Me Made May outfits popping up on blogs and instagram and this has really inspired me to do more sewing. I’m hoping I will have enough me made garments to join in next year!

My latest make was the Megan Dress from Tilly’s Love at First Stitch. I’ve been slowly working my way through the book and this is my favourite thing I’ve made so far. In fact, when I first bought the book, this dress was the outfit I was most looking forward to making. I fell in love with it straight away. I don’t know why I waited so long to make it!

My biggest problem was choosing which fabric to use. So. Much. Choice!!! I could spend forever looking at fabrics and never actually sew anything! I eventually settled on a blurred floral stretch cotton sateen. I’ve made my last few pieces out of sateen or stretch cotton and I really enjoy sewing with it.

In my quest for accuracy, I took my time and measured everything accurately! (Although I did skip making a toile based on the fact that I’d made 3 other Tilly garments on a size 4 and they fit me ok). I drew all the dart lines and markings on carefully and cut as neatly as possibly. I can tell an improvement in my sewing accuracy when thinking back to this time last year.

This was my third time sewing in an invisible zip without an invisible zip foot, and is my best attempt yet. Definitely improving with practise. Previously, I’d struggled to sew close to the zip teeth when sewing around the zipper, but I think I’ve finally cracked it! Go me!!

My most invisible invisible zip yet!

The new skill for this garment was setting in sleeves and I have to say it wasn’t as painful as I was expecting! Tilly’s excellent step by step instructions definitely help and using gathers was a nice feature to the dress!

I didn’t make any alterations to the pattern, just sewed a straight size 4. The bodice fits pretty well, but I think I could’ve graded it down a size at the hips. I’m learning that my hips are smaller than my waist and bust size!

Overall I’m really pleased with this dress! I just need a night out or occasion to wear it!
